Four curated eras

Each era is its own bundle, or combine multiple. Curated by historical period to support focused study of style evolution.

Dutch Golden Age (17th C)

The era that defined flower still life as a serious genre. Bosschaert, de Heem, van Huysum, Rachel Ruysch — botanical accuracy meeting symbolic depth, taught in every academy since.

Featured artists Ambrosius Bosschaert · Jan Davidsz. de Heem · Jan van Huysum · Rachel Ruysch · Maria van Oosterwijck
Technique focus Layered glazing, dark backgrounds, dramatic single-source lighting, botanical precision

18th Century Academic

Refinement of Dutch tradition into rococo elegance. Looser compositions, softer palettes, narrative integration with figurative work.

Featured artists Jean-Baptiste Monnoyer · Anne Vallayer-Coster · Jan Frans van Dael
Technique focus Pastel-influenced palettes, asymmetric compositions, integration of textiles and ceramics

19th Century Romantic

Personal expression overtakes symbolic tradition. Fantin-Latour, Manet, and the early Impressionists treat flowers as studies in light, atmosphere, and intimate observation.

Featured artists Henri Fantin-Latour · Édouard Manet · Pierre-Auguste Renoir · Eugène Delacroix
Technique focus Visible brushwork, atmospheric perspective, broken color, plein-air influence

Late 19th / Early 20th C

Post-impressionist and early modern flower painting. Van Gogh, Cézanne, Redon push the genre into expression, structure, and pure color.

Featured artists Vincent van Gogh · Paul Cézanne · Odilon Redon · Henri Matisse (early)
Technique focus Bold color theory, structural composition, abstraction of form, expressive mark-making

Frequently asked questions

Are these paintings really public domain?

Yes. All works in this collection are sourced from open-access museum archives — primarily the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Rijksmuseum, and the National Gallery of Art (DC). These institutions have explicitly released the digital reproductions under CC0 (Creative Commons Zero), waiving all copyright claims. You may use them commercially, modify them, and redistribute them without attribution required.

Why pay if these are free at the museums?

Three reasons: (1) Curation — we've already filtered through thousands of works to assemble the most useful 150 reference pieces, organized by era and subject. (2) Annotation — each painting includes a curator note on technique, palette, and historical context. (3) Format — files are pre-cropped, color-extracted, and Procreate-ready, saving 5+ minutes of prep per painting. You're paying for the time you don't spend on logistics.

What resolution are the images?

Most paintings are delivered at 4000–8000 pixels on the long edge — museum-grade scanning resolution. Suitable for print up to large format, digital painting reference, and detailed study of brushwork. Lower-resolution web previews (1200–2000px) are also included for fast browsing.

Can I use these for commercial work?

Yes. CC0 means no commercial restrictions. Use them in your paintings for sale, in commercial illustration, in courses you sell, in NFT collections, in published books, on merchandise — anything. Attribution to the source museum is appreciated as a courtesy but not required.

How do I receive the files after purchase?

Immediately after payment via Gumroad, you receive an email with a download link. The link delivers a ZIP archive containing the paintings, the curator catalog PDF, and the metadata index. The download link remains active for lifetime — you can re-download anytime if you change devices.

What's the file format?

Each painting is delivered in 3 variants: (1) archival JPEG at full resolution for print/study, (2) web-optimized JPEG (~1500px) for fast browsing, (3) Procreate-ready PSD with the background layer separated for easy reference panel use (Complete tier only). Catalog notes are in PDF format.

Will more eras or themes be added?

Yes. The Complete tier includes lifetime access to future updates of the Classical Flower Masters collection — we're adding additional artists and a 'rare botanicals' supplement in upcoming releases. Standalone bundles include the version current at purchase, with optional upgrade pricing to access future additions.

Refund policy?

Gumroad's standard 7-day refund applies. If the curation isn't useful for your study, contact support and we'll refund — no questions asked. Digital nature means there's no return; we trust the honor system.
